Over 4.5 Million Kenyans are yet to register as voters even as mass voter registration exercise enters week 3.
Only 1.5 million voters have registered so far, with the exercise expected to close next week.

This is according to IEBC commissioner Justus Nyang’aya who was in Nyeri county during the registration exercise at the Nyeri Maximum Prison in King’ong’o where the commission sought to register voters in the prison.

Nyang’aya saying that they are not sure why the numbers are low and called on the youth to register as voters even as the registration exercise enters the last week saying the numbers are not impressive however expressing optimism to that more people will register as voters.

Alicia Kanini who is the IEBC officer in charge of Nyeri county, says they have registered only 9500 out of a possible 104,000 targets residents.
Kanini says the numbers are low but they are working to ensure more people register.

Yusuf Kaitopok, the in charge at the maximum security facility said the opportunity to give to the prisoners a chance to register as voters was welcome and will give inmates the power to exercise their democratic right as Kenyans.

The commissioner added that there is need to conduct a research to establish the reason for the low numbers but added that they are working to increase the numbers of special interest groups such as people in the diaspora and prisoners.
