Humanitarian Aid Extended to Flood Affected Communities in Mai Mahiu

The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Zachariah Njeru EGH, embarked on a mission of relief and support for the affected residents.

Accompanied by a multi-agency security team, comprising the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Youth Service (NYS), Kenya Police Service (KPS), and the Kenya Red Cross, among others, CS Njeru visited the displaced victims at Ngeya Girls Secondary School. There, he conveyed a message of solidarity and hope, assuring them of government support during this challenging period.

During his address to the media, CS Njeru announced a significant donation from the Ministry and its agencies, aimed at providing immediate relief to those affected. The aid package included 1500 iron sheets, 10 tents, roofing nails, 25 bags of rice, 300 pieces of blankets, 3 water tanks with a capacity of 6000 litres each, 5000 litres of diesel, and a financial contribution of Ksh 500,000 to address any emergency cases that may arise.

In addition to the relief efforts, CS Njeru stressed the importance of proactive measures to mitigate future disasters. He urged residents living along riparian lands to vacate promptly, emphasizing the potential dangers posed by the ongoing rains across the country. Revealing plans for the construction of 100 mega dams, the CS outlined the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring water security for the nation.

The Cabinet Secretary was joined by several key officials, including PS Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho CBS, Water Secretary Eng SAO Alima EBS, Irrigation Secretary Eng Vincent Kabuti, Secretary Administration State Department for Irrigation Mr. David Yatich, CEO of the Water Resources Authority (WRA) Mohamed Shurie, CEO of the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) Eng Kamau, CEO of the Coast Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) Mr. Mure, Acting CEO of the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA) Eng John Muhia, and CEO of the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) Eng Charles Mwasya. The presence of Nakuru County Commissioner Mr. Loyford Kibaara and the security team underscored the collaborative effort between national and local authorities to address the crisis.

As Mai Mahiu and surrounding areas continue to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, the government’s swift response and coordinated efforts offer a glimmer of hope for the affected communities, reaffirming the commitment to providing relief and building resilience in the face of natural disasters.
