Nairobi City County has been urged to incorporate Nyumba Kumi members and community volunteers in measures that can help end the frequent fire outbreaks.

City MCAs have also urged the firefighting services and disaster management department to be proactive by implementing relevant measures that can end fire outbreaks.

Mulango Kubwa MCA Patricia Mutheu challenged the executive to use the over Sh400 million allocated to the department by involving all stakeholders at community level.

“ The County can do this by equipping Nyumba Kumi and selecting volunteers under it, with the necessary facilities such as fire extinguishers to act as first responders in case of fire or other emergency outbreaks,” she said.

The county has in the last two months experienced seven fire outbreaks with the majority happening in markets and estates near the Central Business District.

The recent fire saw property worth millions gutted down along Jogoo road while Gikomba market fire incidents have become a norm.

The MCA wants the  Nyumba Kumi members and volunteers allowed to work closely with the fire department and be equipped  with the necessary skills and equipment to enable them to respond faster to fire and emergencies.
