Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), has delivered a thought-provoking message, urging Kenyans to reflect on the status of workers and the challenges they face within the country’s socio-economic landscape.

Acknowledging the indispensable role played by the working class in driving Kenya’s economy and societal progress, Odhiambo emphasized the daily efforts and sacrifices made by over 19 million employed Kenyans. However, she drew attention to the sobering reality that a corresponding number of Kenyans still grapple with poverty, despite their contributions to the nation’s prosperity.

Odhiambo pointed to systemic issues within Kenya’s socio-economic framework that hinder not only individual economic advancement but also opportunities for self-actualization. She highlighted the prevalence of employment disputes, particularly concerning benefits and remuneration, often exacerbated in cases where the employer is the government.

In a critique of the government’s response to workers’ concerns, Odhiambo condemned tactics such as frustrating trade unions, negotiating in bad faith, and employing police force to suppress labor rights agitation. She argued that such actions undermine the principles of fair labor practices and hinder progress towards improving working conditions and addressing workers’ needs.

As Kenya marks Labor Day, Odhiambo issued a call to action, urging all citizens to unite in advocating for the full realization of Article 41 rights, which guarantee fair labor practices. She emphasized that ensuring these rights is essential for creating working conditions that respect the dignity of workers and meet their demands effectively.

Faith Odhiambo’s impassioned plea underscores the importance of collective reflection and action in addressing labor rights issues and fostering a more equitable and just society for all workers in Kenya. As the nation commemorates Labor Day, her message serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for fair treatment and the need for concerted efforts to uphold the rights and dignity of workers across the countr
