Special Interest Groups to Be Awarded Business Places in Nairobi

Persons living with disability will be allocated 5% of business places in the City if a new motion currently before the County Assembly sails through.

In a notice of motion to the Assembly, Nominated MCA representing special interest groups Mary Ariviza is championing for people with disability to be given among other things discounted tax to operate in the city.

A 2015 Act 0f Nairobi County Government on Persons living with disability had set aside 5 % of jobs, Tenders and Buildings be given to people living with disability.

However this has not been implemented since a board that is supposed to be operationalized the same has not been set up despite the assembly giving the go ahead for its formulation.

“Concerned that people living with disabilities have not been given priority in allocation of business space within the Nairobi City County; further concerned that few traders who Managed to a secure a spaces have faced harassment       from County Government officers which has led to protests by such traders. this Assembly urges the County Government to set aside at least five percent of all business spaces within the Central Business District, specific points in the City streets, County markets and trading Centres for people living With disability and ensure adherence to the provisions of the Constitution. ,” read the statement

Arivisa says that once the board is operationalized it will spearhead the implementation of the regulations meant to ease the movement and operations of PWDs in the county.

According to the Nairobi City County Persons with Disabilities Act of 2015, persons with disabilities are entitled to a barrier-free and disability-friendly environment to enable them to have access to buildings, roads and other social amenities, and assistive and other equipment to promote their mobility.
