Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives, Ms. Winfred Gathagu together with County Executive Committee Member In charge of Education, Ms. Janet Ouko today attended the launch of the Digital Art Exhibition at the National Museums of Kenya.
The exhibition seeks to capture works by young artists inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic and period of social distancing.
It is also motivated by the possibilities of new artforms that Artificial Intelligence introduces in Art and its presentation as is the theme for this year “The future of museums :Recover and re-imagine”.
Art In Isolation : Interrogating Museum Futures, a Kraal Heritage project attempts to capture a momentous, natural occurring collective art expression and its significance to the possible future of museums.
“I’m delighted to be here to celebrate International Museums Day 2021 and also wish to convey greetings from Deputy Governor and acting Governor, H.E Ann Kananu. I wish to inspire you to make Nairobi, your City of choice, to live, work and invest in. Nairobi County Government is committed to making Nairobi a better City and a world class tourism destination not just in the region but globally.”

Ms. Gathagu acknowledged that 2020 was marred by the Covid- 19 pandemic crisis and had affected the whole world which led to loss of lives, jobs and businesses. Museums as well have been affected, the cultural sector being the most affected, she said. “The crisis had served as a catalyst of social innovation and re-engineering of our thinking globally and increased focus on digitization and creation of new cultural experiences and determination. At the time where we are required to social distance, this year’s art exhibition seeks to capture works, explores changes and future trends in curation and consumption of art.”
Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman, H.E Saleh Sulaiman Al-Harthi spoke of the great partnership and cooperation that Kenya has with Oman and its rich culture and history.
In attendance also Hon. Ababu Namwamba EGH, Chief Administrative Secretary (C.A.S) Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade who congratulated the National Museum of Kenya for celebrating the 44th International Museum Day. Said Mr Namwamba “Such occasions should not only be held when celebrating rich culture and societal ideas but to think back where we came from and project the future, where we are headed.”
