Kibera’s largest open Market, Toi will soon be renamed to Raila Odinga Market.

This has been revealed by the Nairobi County Assembly Majority leader and Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok.

According to the legislator, the renaming of Toi after the former prime Minister will make the people who burn the market fear for the respect of Raila.

“We passed the motion of renaming the roads and other institutions Act. We are proposing to bring a motion to rename the Toi market to Raila Odinga. This will happen in a few weeks to come and it will be to safeguard the legacy of the market through a legend who is our party leader,” Imwatok stated.

He dismissed the issues raised by their counterpart of the UDA party over issues of public participation saying affirming that when the motion comes, there will be public participation according to the renaming Act.

On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, the Nairobi County Assembly passed a motion that will see Toi market having a perimeter wall built around it in the coming Financial (FY 2023/2024)

The motion which comes timely after an arson incident at the market a few weeks ago, requires that the budget committee sets aside a budget that will ensure the wall is immediately built.

“The budget Committee led by the Chair Wilfred Odallo must include in the coming budget before it is read. Or the executive should look for other ways to fund the construction like public-private partnerships, grants, or development loans to finance the construction for timely completion and sustainability,” He stated.

Imwatok stated that there should be a collaboration with the administrative authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure that the rebuilding of the market after the recent arson meets the specific needs of the traders.

The Budget of Nairobi City County is expected to be read on 27 of June 2023.
