Hosted by esteemed figures in the realm of security and governance, including Ps Dr. Raymond Omollo and CS Kindiki, the conference aims to address pressing challenges and chart a course towards more efficient and harmonized border management strategies.

In his remarks, Ps Dr. Raymond Omollo underscored the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in ensuring the security and integrity of national borders. Emphasizing the need for a shared sense of purpose, Dr. Omollo highlighted the pivotal role of inter-agency cooperation in mitigating the myriad challenges confronting border management. He particularly stressed the importance of facilitating legitimate trade while ensuring security, advocating for stronger bonds of cooperation among agencies such as the Anti-Counterfeit Authority.

Highlighting the achievements made thus far, Dr. Omollo pointed to advancements in data collection and analysis, which have enabled better identification and response to transborder and organized crimes. He also noted the increased clearance of persons at points of entry through the implementation of a visa-free regime, reflecting strides towards facilitating legitimate movement across borders.

CS Kindiki echoed Dr. Omollo’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to border control and management. He reiterated the profound duty incumbent upon the conference attendees in safeguarding the nation’s stability and regulating cross-border movement of people, goods, and animals. Stressing the importance of coordination within national agencies and multilateral global coordination, CS Kindiki outlined the conference’s objectives to oversee and enhance efficiency in border management for trade facilitation and the movement of people.

However, amidst the achievements and aspirations, both speakers acknowledged the formidable challenges facing modern border management. CS Kindiki highlighted the changing nature of borders, with the emergence of virtual borders posing new complications in security and governance. Moreover, the increasing reliance on digital technology, including cyberspace, presents new challenges in protecting vital borders from non-intentional risks such as biosecurity threats.

Addressing these challenges, both speakers emphasized the need for substantial investments in border control technology and infrastructure. CS Kindiki underscored the importance of modernizing equipment for national security organs and supporting agencies such as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Immigration Department. Investments in cyber security and unmanned aerial vehicles by KRA signify a concerted effort to equip officers with the necessary tools to confront emerging challenges effectively.

In conclusion, the inaugural National Border Management Conference sets a precedent for concerted efforts in securing and regulating national borders. With a commitment to collaboration, integration, and technological advancement, stakeholders aim to foster regional integration while ensuring the facilitation of legitimate trade and travel in a secure manner.
