Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka has called on the Nzoia sugar management to make maximum use of their large nucleus of land.

Speaking while on an inspection tour to assess the state of the firm’s nucleus, the governor said the factory has the largest nucleus, which, if well utilised, will steer it to self-sustainability.

“This is the only mill with such a lot of land in the entire country, and it is unfortunate that it has never been put to maximum use, said Lusaka.

According to acting managing director Ezron Kotut,Nzoia has more than 4629 hectares. (11,572 acres).

Out of this, 3600 hectares (9000 acres) are the nucleus, with only 1600 hectares (4000 acres) having cane and 2000 hectares (5000 acres) lie fallow.

Already, the area leaders led by Governor Lusaka have negotiated for help from the Agriculture Development Cooperation (ADC) and the National Youth Service, who will help in the tilling of the land and planting cane.

This will see the nucleus put to profitable use.

Currently, the firm has closed its operations because of a lack of cane.

Area senator Wafula Wakoli and Kanduyi MP John Makali echoed the statements, saying that as leaders from the region, they will do everything to ensure the factory remains viable.
