A section of Mt. Elgon journalists, in conjunction with the Rehema Foundation, paid a visit to Kaptola FYM special school on Wednesday to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Speaking during the interactive session with the intellectually challenged students, Rehema Mutios, the CEO of Rehema Foundation, expressed her excitement about sharing Valentine’s Day with the special beings in a special way.

“We started this foundation in December last year, and amazingly, we have done great thus far by touching many lives through our partnerships with our sponsors,” said Mutios.

Martin Wambete, the head teacher at Kaptola FYM Special School, thanked the media fraternity for their selfless noble acts and urged them to seek more partnerships so that they can continue assisting the special students throughout their learning.

“The greatest gift these students can get now is a dormitory, especially for the female students, who are vulnerable and at higher risk of defilement, rape, and, in most cases, incest,” Wambete observed.

The school’s deputy head teacher, Elizabeth Kusimba, on the other hand, said that they had no requital for the noble act, but they’d continue loving and taking care of their students to the best of their ability.

“We take in all students with intellectual challenges, and regardless of their age, they join foundation class, then intermediate, and later pre-vocation, then they graduate to the vocational stage.

“At the foundation stage, they learn basics like counting and reading; at the intermediate level, they’re taught skills like weaving and sewing; needles to say, they’re perfect at it,” reiterated Kusimba as she showed the handbags, baskets, and mats woven by the students.

The students received sanitary towels, toilet paper rolls and flour from the foundation.

The school was started in 2023 and has been greatly aided by the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya.
