Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has written to Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome and the Office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to issue orders for his release from Muthaiga Police Station.

Echesa, who was arrested on Wednesday over alleged self-abduction, is yet to be released despite being detained for more than 24 hours by the police officers at the station.

In a letter through city lawyer Danstan Omari, the former CS says his fundamental rights have been violated by the officers, including access to medication or being seen by his family members.

“This letter is a request for the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to authorize the Officer Commanding Muthaiga Police Station to take our client to the hospital so that his doctor can review his medical condition as directed in our client’s medical documents,” reads the letter.

“His continued detention will lead to deterioration in his health, and any form of justice related to his arrest cannot possibly take precedence over his health,” added the letter.

Omari now urges the former Sports CS and current chairman of the water towers to be released on police bond or cash bail pending his arraignment in court next week.

Echesa, who is still detained at Muthaiga Police Station, was arrested on Wednesday shortly after honoring summons by the DCI over alleged self-abduction and extortion against Kakamega Governor Fernandez Baraza.
