Bungoma deputy governor Janepher Mbatiany has called on parents to be responsible for their children’s behavior, especially during this long holiday.

Speaking during the launch of the Matthews Kabindio football tournament in Kapsokwony, Mt. Elgon subcounty, on Thursday, Mbatiany said that the high prevalence rate of teenage pregnancies in the region is to blame on parents’ negligence.

“It is very disheartening to see Bungoma topping the list of teenage mothers and school dropouts, and to make matters worse, Mt. Elgon, where I call home, continues to register more of such cases besides forced early marriages,” lamented Mbatiany.

She further bemoaned leaders who are drunk with power or indulge in cheap politics instead of focusing on service to the wananchi.

“Today as we launch this tournament, I salute Kabindio for this noble initiative. It has nothing to do with politics, but we are determined to save the youth and nurture upcoming talents,” she divulged.

Matthews Kabindio, who is the initiator of the idea, emphasized that his dream is to see a region full of empowered youths, regardless of gender.
