Nairobi City’s acting county secretary, Patrick Analo, has appealed to the Nairobi County Assembly, specifically through the justice and legal affairs committee (JLAC), to facilitate the return of the City Magistrate court, which was relocated to Milimani Law Courts by the judiciary.

This shift has resulted in a substantial financial setback for the City County, with losses exceeding Ksh. 59 Million amid the ongoing dispute between the county government and the judiciary on this matter.

Analo highlighted that the city magistrate court, responsible for handling minor cases, was moved to Milimani under the jurisdiction of the Judiciary on October 2, 2023. Consequently, cash bail and fines are now processed at Milimani Law Courts, following the issuance of an invoice at the Milimani Law Courts County Registry counter.

Expressing concerns during a committee meeting with the JLAC Committee on Wednesday afternoon, Analo emphasized the potential repercussions of the court’s absence. He warned that without the enforcement of laws and county bylaws, Nairobi could regress, with residents likely to disregard various regulations, leading to issues such as spitting, littering, prostitution, and unlicensed hawking. Analo stressed the urgency of reinstating the courts under the control of the Nairobi County government to maintain law and order in the city.
