In the heart of Narok County, there resides a remarkable individual who has devoted his life to
bringing about positive change in his community.

Meet Paul Taraiya Ole Sopia, a proud resident of Empopongi, who has not only been a source of inspiration but also a tireless advocate for persons living with disabilities. His unrelenting efforts have left an indelible mark on the lives of many, earning him the admiration and respect of all those fortunate enough to know him.

Paul embarked on his journey as a champion for those with disabilities in 2001 when he founded the
Narok Disabled Integrated Programme.

His commitment to this noble cause is unwavering, and his tireless work has transformed the lives of countless individuals with disabilities in Narok County.

Serving as the Chairperson of this program, he has been instrumental in providing opportunities and
support to those who need it the most.

In recognition of his exceptional dedication and unwavering commitment, Paul was appointed as a
member of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund county committee of Narok County on
December 24, 2020.

This prestigious appointment, documented in Gazette issue No. 235, is a testament to his outstanding service and leadership in advocating for the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Beyond his role as an advocate, Paul is also a prominent community leader and mobilizer.

In 1998, he played a pivotal role in establishing Empopongi Primary School, making an extraordinary
contribution to the education system in his locality.

His efforts have opened doors to countless children, providing them with access to quality education and the promise of a brighter future.

Paul’s dedication goes beyond advocacy and community leadership. He is also a hardworking crop
and livestock farmer, supporting his family through his passion for agriculture. Farming is not just a
source of income for him; it’s a reflection of his exceptional work ethic and determination to balance
multiple roles.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions and exceptional character, Paul was honored as a
‘Great’ by Kenya Cane through the brand’s “Greats Toast Twice” campaign.

This campaign celebrates everyday achievements and milestones made by Kenyans on their journey towards greatness.

The celebration took place during the Kenya Cane Narok Greats Fest on October 14th, where he was
presented with a well-deserved award.

“Our group supports 18 people. Our mandate is to get equal rights and opportunities for persons
living with disabilities. We want them included in decision making and development of our
community and given opportunities for personal development so they can support themselves and
their families, ” he said.

“We also advocate for mindset change. Disability should not keep anyone from their goals and
ambitions. They should not have to live at the mercy of others. We offer them economic
empowerment to opportunities for financial independence. We have worked with the County
government to allocate a number of stalls at the bus park for our members to run their businesses.
We also encourage them to take up farming to feed themselves and their families and give them
access to bursaries to support their education and that of their children,” he added.

The story of Paul Taraiya Ole Sopia is a testament to the power of dedication, advocacy, and
community involvement.

His commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities, his
invaluable role in education, and his resilience as a farmer exemplify the spirit of change and greatness in Narok County.

Paul’s journey serves as an inspiration and a reminder that through unwavering determination, individuals can make a significant impact in their communities and beyond.

As we celebrate his accomplishments, let us also strive to follow in his footsteps and work
