Mumias Sugar Employees Decry Forceful eviction

Employees and Farmers of Mumias Sugar Company have been forcefully evicted from the premises of the company by the Sarai Group Management until the petition which was filed by various entities opposing the leasing is listened to and determined.

A High Court order was issued barring the Uganda firm from carrying out any operations until March 14.

The employees, including both the administrative and technical staff, were ejected without notice were dispersed by the police when they tried airing their grievances to the media.

“These employees have labored and toiled for many years. If there is an investor here he has the speak with the workers. This company I called Mumias because of the workers and the farmers. We want president Kenyatta to help in solving this problem. We want to be told how many workers will be laid off and how many will continue with the work,” decried one of the Mumias Sugarcane Workers.

“The investor came so as to help us get something to pay for the fees of our kids and buy food for them. He has to look after the needs of the employees,” he added.

The workers claimed strangers from Uganda who is suspected to be among the Sarai Group were removing the stalled machine of the state miller and secretly transported the equipment to Uganda.

The equipment included Turbines and sugarcane processors.

High Court judge Wilfrida Okwany on Tuesday extended the court order barring the Ugandan company, Sarai Group, from taking over operations of Mumias Sugar Company until the determination on the filed petition is made.

Mumias Sugarcane farmers and West-Kenya Sugar Company filed a petition asking why the earlier bid of 30.2 billion was rejected and the 5.8 billion by the Sarai Group was accepted.

The interim orders serve until 14 March when the matters will be mentioned.
