Nairobi CBD Member of County Assembly, Daniel Ngengi has requested a statement from the environment and natural resources committee regarding the collection of Garbage in the county Specifically in Muthurwa and Marikiti Markets.

According to Ngengi, the two markets are vital for the supply of food that is consumed in the larger Nairobi County and the place being left stinky, filthy, clogged drainage and littered waste is a risk for the consumers.

“it’s a clear demonstration of disparity in the work being done by the garbage collectors and it is creating a major conduit for graft,” paused Ngengi.

He accused the garbage collectors of destroying the only road by their excavators and left pits that risk the lives of pedestrians, lorries, and Matatus that use the place as their terminal.

The MCA explained that they have made numerous complaints and meetings since 2019 with the NMS and County officials but there has been no positive response.

“Despite the repeated numerous complaints since 2019 and several meetings with the Nairobi City County officials in 2018 and with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services in the last two years, whose main objective was to take action and redeem the situation there still doesn’t seem to be any action by the county,” he said.

He wants the NMS to explain when they will complete the promised recovery facilities, cover pits and fix the road in the market and ensure effectiveness when it comes to garbage collection in the said areas.

“Policy measures should be put in place by the county to properly monitor the collection of garbage to enhance efficiency,” added Ngengi.
