The ceremony, attended by key stakeholders including Kwale Senator Hon Boy Issa Juma, Lungalunga MP Hon Mangale Munga, Msambweni MP Hon. Feisal Abdallah Bader, and Members of the Kwale County Assembly, marked a historic moment as the first-ever post-mining committee established in Kenya since the enactment of the Mining Act 2016.

Chaired by the PS Mining, the committee comprises members from various government bodies including the PS for Environment and Climate Change, officials from the State Department for Mining, Kwale County Government, Base Titanium, National Treasury, State Law Office, NEMA, National Land Commission, State Department for Industry, Kwale County Commissioner, and representatives of Kwale elected leaders.

The establishment of this committee underscores Kenya’s commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices. As Base Titanium concludes its mining operations in Kwale County, the committee will play a crucial role in overseeing the rehabilitation and post-mining land use activities.

Following the inauguration, the committee members conducted an extensive tour of Base Titanium’s mine-operation site to inspect the progress of rehabilitation works currently underway. Base Titanium has been praised as a model of excellence in mining operations, symbolizing the transformative potential of sustainable mining activities in the region.

In his remarks, H.E. Salim Mvurya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting mining investors and ensuring that the benefits of mineral extraction are maximized for the benefit of local communities, counties, and the country at large.

The establishment of the post-mining land use committee marks a significant step forward in ensuring that Kenya’s mining sector operates in an environmentally responsible and socially beneficial manner, setting a precedent for future mining activities in the country.
