Ripple Effect, in collaboration with Brooke East Africa, held a donkey clinic on Friday at Kamuneru, Mt. Elgon, where more than twenty donkey (s) were vaccinated, treated, and had their wounds dressed.

The activity was aimed at giving private animal health practitioners (para vets) and government veterinarians an opportunity to interact with donkeys practically.

“I have never interacted with a donkey in my line of duty; this is my first time. In class, we were only taught theories about its anatomy, but thanks to Ripple Effect, we can now implement our knowledge by helping out donkey farmers,” said Farida Nanjala, a para vet from Kabuchai.

Abel Okiring, a farmer who owns two donkeys, showed his gratitude for the day’s activity, mentioning that all his animals have received vaccinations, deworming, and their hooves trimmed.

“This has been a very educational session for us as veterinarians and farriers; the farmers have also been trained on donkey handling and administering basic drugs,” noted Dr. Emmanuel Wechabe, Tongaren Sub County Veterinary Officer.

Kennedy Sikiriet, a practicing veterinarian within Mt. Elgon, thanked the farmers for heeding the call and prioritizing their donkeys’ welfare.

“All farmers who’ve come today have benefited from free treatment of donkey wounds, deworming, and hoof trimming. We encourage them to respond positively again next time we call them for such an occasion,” advised Sikiriet.

Fred Machawera, the owner of one donkey in Kamuneru, commended the noble action of Ripple Effect, saying donkeys deserve more than just medication but also proper handling and care as they’ve been taught.
