Traders Lose Millions In Kisumu After Fires Rampaged their Goods

Property Worth millions was today morning destroyed by fire at Uganda Jua Kali group Section of Kamas , Kisumu County.

It is reported that the fire started at around 3am when security guard noticed it from one of the spare parts shop.

Efforts to contain the fire were futile as it ended up burning 20 spare part shops and three cars which were in one of the workshops within.

Speaking to Taarifa News, Uganda group Jua kali Kamas chairman Mark Odero says the fire left over 200 mechanics and other traders jobless.

“We were alarmed at around 3AM and when we got there everything had already burnt. Fire Engines from the County government of Kisumu arrived late so they couldn’t save anything. There were twenty spare parts shops here. we have around five hundred people who have been affected. We have lost property of around Ksh. 3Million. ” Said Mark.

Mark reported that the workshop had customer’s engines, new spare parts plus three cars which got burnt.

“We have lost millions. We even don’t know how we will start our lives. There were three cars which have got burnt. New car spare parts and many more,” he added.

Josephine Adhiambo hotel owner within the affected area says that the fire burnt down everything she owns.


“The fire destroyed everything I had, including chicken, utensils, furniture, everything… I even don’t know what I will do,” lamented Adhiambo

John Otieno alias Jasuba further stated that the fire burnt down his tool box plus his customers properties.

The traders now appeals to any wellwisher or the government to assist them get ways of starting again.
“The affected people now have nothing. We are calling on the well-wishers and the county government of Kisumu to atleast help us. This is where we got our fees, food and our daily basic requirements,” Said Mark.

The chairman also appealed to the county government of Kisumu to assist them in setting up permanent structures for their businesses.

” If it’s possible we call on the County government of Kisumu to at least enable us build permanent structures,” added Mark.
