Tana River County MP, Hon. Amina Dika, has called upon the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy, Water, and Irrigation to address the pressing issue of flooding in the region by exploring the potential of stormwater harvesting.

In a statement presented to the committee, Hon. Dika emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of flooding experienced by residents of Tana River County. The area is prone to extreme weather fluctuations, often facing either flooding during heavy rainfall or droughts in the dry season.

Highlighting the significance of stormwater harvesting, Hon. Dika underscored its potential to alleviate the perennial issue of flooding while simultaneously enhancing agricultural activities and ensuring food security for the community. By harnessing stormwater for agricultural purposes, residents can utilize water resources year-round, mitigating the impact of both floods and droughts.

The MP posed critical questions to the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, seeking clarification on the strategies in place for stormwater harvesting and long-term drought mitigation. Additionally, she inquired about the government’s support mechanisms for communities affected by heavy rains and its efforts to address the overflow of dams upstream, which exacerbates flooding downstream.

Hon. Amina Dika’s advocacy reflects a proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges and enhancing resilience in Tana River County. By prioritizing stormwater harvesting, the government can effectively manage water resources, mitigate flood risks, and promote sustainable development in the region.
