Nairobi’s Mutuini Hospital will soon be renamed Mama Rachael Ruto Hospital.
This was hinted at by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during the flag-off of the medical equipment and medicine on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.
“We shall soon be having a motion in the assembly to rename the Mutuini Hospital to Mama Rachael Ruto Hospital-Mutuini and upgrade it to a level five,” Sakaja stated.
If the motion is tabled in the Assembly, Mutuini will be the first hospital to be renamed after the first lady.
During the tenure of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Mathare-Korogocho Hospital was renamed to former First Lady Margret Kenyatta and it is now Mama Margret Kenyatta Hospital.
In 2012, The Embakasi District Hospital was also renamed Mama Lucy Hospital.
Renaming of roads and streets in Nairobi has caused an uproar with some even ejecting the post bearing the name.
With the uproar, NMS decided to develop a policy for naming and renaming streets and roads in the capital.
In the past, renaming is done when an MCA gave notice of motion. It was then debated and approved and the executive replaced the old sign with a new one.
However, according to the new policy by NMS in 2022, it will require an online application in a prescribed form and will be subject to assembly approval.
The County Addressing Unit will consider it and forward an invoice if it is approved.
“The proposed name must meet policy guidelines; if it does not, the applicant will be informed and allowed to resubmit a name in 14 days. Upon approval by the assembly, the county shall update the map and install a new street nameplate within 30 days,” the plan stated.
Names must not be longer than 22 characters, including spacing. Anything vulgar will be rejected.
Duplication of names is prohibited. Geographical names shall be sourced from the name bank at the Director of Surveys.
The CEC for planning is the custodian of the database for building names, street names, and property addresses.
