Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi has expressed confidence in clinching the Nairobi governorship in the 2022 General-Election on an ODM ticket.

Wanyonyi said that his track record in the two terms he has served the constituency speaks for itself, a feat that leaves him as the best bet for the capital city’s gubernatorial management.

The MP who has declared his intention to vie for the governor’s position stated that his 15-year experience in city politics both as a Nominated councillor and an elected Member of Parliament places him ahead of the pack angling to become the third governor of Nairobi.

Speaking during a live interview with a local radio station, Mr Wanyonyi said he had already informed his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), about his decision to seek the governor’s seat at City Hall.

In the interview, Mr Wanyonyi exuded confidence he would easily take over City Hall and that he is now fixated on clinching the ODM nomination ticket.

“I want to announce that in 2022 I will be vying for Nairobi Governor’s seat on ODM ticket,” he said during the morning interview.

However, he was quick to clarify that he is yet to make an official announcement which will mark the start of his official march to City Hall.

Mr Wanyonyi also urged ODM delegates and members to throw their weight behind him once he officially steps in the ring.

“I want to urge all delegates to nominate me to go for the position,” he said.

The second term MP also dismissed claims that the seat had already been reserved for a certain candidate explaining that it was not an agenda in the handshake deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

According to him, the City Hall seat is vacant and free for any candidate from across the political divide to seek.

“Currently, I am working on how to get the ODM nomination for the seat. It’s the party that will decided to give me the ticket. But I am ready to go for the seat,” said Mr Wanyonyi.

“My plan is only one. To go to City Hall, there’s no other way,” he added while allaying fears that he could be shortchanged.

The MP has been in Nairobi politics for close to 15 years now having plunged into the game as a nominated councilor in the defunct City Council.

He first made his mark when he walked to the national podium to endorse Mr Odinga’s presidential bid when the Opposition chief contested for the presidency.

At City Hall, he was instrumental in putting in place various legislations including laws that benefit people living with disability in Kenya.

Today, people living with disability can easily access various offices and buildings with ease following his efforts to have laws that makes their lives easy.
At Westlands Constituency, he has been voted as the best performing legislator due to his track record of development and prudent use of public funds at his disposal.

His record in disbursing and distributing education bursaries has been touted as one of the best in the country.

He is also the only MP to have led two constituencies at once and both of them voted as the best performing.

When former Kibra MP Ken Okoth was hospitalized as he battled cancer, it was Mr Wanyonyi who took over the running of the constituency affairs until Mr Okoth passed on.

During that time, Kibra emerged as one of the best performing constituencies as Mr Wanyonyi did not interfere with the running of activities that had been initiated by his late friend Mr Okoth.
