The education committee of has put to task the Nairobi County Service Board over the recruitment of 498 teachers.
Members of the Nairobi County Education Committee criticised the board over its move to leave out 50 ECD teachers who have been working voluntarily for the county for over 20 years.
The MCAs termed the move by the Board to abscond previous summons as as Arrogance and disrespect after it failed to appear before the committee three times, failing to reply to phone calls and letters.
Early this year the Board had advertised positions for recruitment of 520 ECD teachers after which it went ahead and recruited 498.
Thomas Mweu Kasoa, Who is the Chair of the board in his response said that they could not go beyond the sector establishments to employ more than 498 teachers.
“In our out of court settlement we took some 97 ECD volunteers and placed them,” said Kasoa
A 2015 Bill by the then Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, barred the government from employing persons above the age of 45.

According to nominated Member of County Assembly Hon. Mary Arivista, Who is also a member of the Education Committee, the affected teachers were around 50 in number were under depression for not being allowed even around the schools they’ve taught for 20 years.
“It’s sad that during the recruitment these teachers were left out despite working for the county for over 20 years. I know they were over 45 years but they could have atleast been considered. How will they even explain to their kids who have been seeing them teach in the schools that they can no longer work?” said Arivista.
“I have met with some of the teachers and they are really depressed. This is not good because the teachers had all the qualifications and that the only problem was that they were over 45 years,” she added.
The said teachers were prevented from even getting into or being seen near the premises of the schools.
Fresh details also emerged during the committee sitting on how the education committee engineered for an allocation of up to Ksh12Million shillings and thus their demand on why the teachers were left out.
The Board has been given a period of one month to be back the committee for an explanation of how the remaining 22 positions would be filled as they require the allocated amount be fully utilized.
