A highly anticipated reggae concert scheduled to take place today, March 2nd, 2024, at Makongeni Social Hall, has been abruptly halted by the police. The event, which was set to be one of the largest concerts in the area, was organized by the Member of Parliament for Makadara constituency.
The MP had sought permission from the police to hold the “Estlando Reggae Festival,” targeting the youth population in Makongeni. However, the request was denied by the Makongeni Officer Commanding Station (OSC), citing concerns raised by residents.
According to complaints from some residents, similar concerts in the past have attracted school-going children from the estates and neighboring areas, exposing them to drugs, alcohol, and other vices, including the smoking of shisha.
“This concert is causing harm to our children, exposing them to drugs, alcohol, and other immoral activities. Our girls are also not safe, as they are being exposed to early pregnancies and other STIs and HIV. I am happy that the police have acted swiftly to stop this concert,” expressed one concerned resident.
Makadara parents are questioning the motives behind the MP’s decision to organize such concerts, particularly when school-going children are on half-term break.
“How can a Member of Parliament organize a reggae party within an estate where a conducive environment for children’s learning is needed? Many children also lack school fees and other necessities. This guy should just move to Vihiga,” remarked Jack Odongo, a Makongeni resident.
Makongeni MCA, Peter Imwatok, echoed the sentiment, stating that it was regrettable for anyone to arrange such events in Makongeni, especially when school-going children were on a break.
“In the last KCSE exams, Makongeni Secondary recorded the worst-ever results in history, with the top student scoring a D. It is therefore immoral, unprofessional, and totally unacceptable for anyone to organize such events in Makongeni,” said Imwatok.
