Korogocho Ward MCA Absalom Odhiambo has publicly commended Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for his crucial support in halting planned demolitions within the ward. MCA Odhiambo, known locally as Matach, highlighted Senator Sifuna’s efforts in bringing the plight of Korogocho residents to the attention of the Senate.
Matach recalled President William Ruto’s assurances during the launch of an affordable housing project in the area, where he promised that no one would be forcibly evicted. However, the MCA expressed dismay that recent activities, including the presence of bulldozers in the ward, suggested otherwise.
According to enforcement officers, the impending demolitions were deemed necessary due to the erection of structures along the Nairobi River, which they argued posed a danger to the slum dwellers. However, MCA Matach questioned the fairness of the operation, pointing out what he perceived as a double standard.
“There are wealthy individuals who have constructed multi-story buildings along the same river, starting from Muthaiga. The government should not apply double standards in this operation,” Matach asserted. “If it’s a matter of demolition, then it should be applied uniformly and not spare the affluent simply to make way for affordable housing.”
He further emphasized the long-standing connection of the residents to the area. “These are poor families who legally inherited this land from their ancestors; this is their home,” he stated, arguing that eviction would constitute a grave injustice.
Senator Sifuna recently presented a petition before the Senate on behalf of the Korogocho Community Forum, addressing alleged inhumane evictions, the absence of compensation, and insufficient public participation in ongoing eviction efforts along the Nairobi River Corridor.
The petition urged the Senate to launch investigations and propose recommendations regarding compensation for those already displaced, as well as to establish safeguards for residents potentially affected by future evictions.
Addressing the Senate, Senator Sifuna stated, “It is unacceptable for a community that has resided in this area for decades to face eviction without proper notice, public consultation, or a clear framework for compensation.” He stressed the deep roots of the community, noting, “Many of these residents are structure owners who have lived here their entire lives and have no other place to call home. The County Government should, therefore, act with compassion.”
The MCA’s praise for Senator Sifuna underscores the growing concern and resistance within the Korogocho community against the planned demolitions and highlights the crucial role of political intervention in advocating for the rights of residents. The Senate’s response to the petition will be closely watched by the affected community and human rights advocates.
