Two Commissioners of the anti-graft agency Ethic and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) tendered in their resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta, four months before the end of their term, which was due in December 2021, in the surprise move reportedly to pave way for a smooth transition.

The EACC Chairman Archbishop (Emeritus) Dr. Eliud Wabukala broke the news in a statement shared on the Commission’s twitter handle, saying that:

“His Excellency President has today (2nd September, 2021) received and accepted the resignation of Mrs. Rose Mghoi Macharia and Dr. Dabar Abdi Maalim as members of the Commission.”

The statement said that the two Commissioners were elected as members of the Commission by President Uhuru on 17th December 2015 for a term of six (6) years. The Commission is made up of 5members, one of whom is then elected as the Chairperson.

With the Chairperson Dr Wabukala, the other Commissioners still serving are the Vice Chairperson Sophia Lepuchirit and Mwaniki Gachoka.Archbp. (Emeritus) Dr. Wabukala thanked the two members for their “immense contribution in strategic direction, policy formulation, and oversight in the management of the affairs of the Commission,” adding that “the efforts have bolstered the stability and optimal performance of the EACC.”

President Uhuru has been very vocal on the efforts to rid the country of graft, and has given the anti-agencies body his government’s full support, enabling the agencies to work without interference.

He publicly told his Cabinet members and other top public officials that they “will bear their own cross” if caught engaging in graft.
