Recent satellite images have revealed the deployment of the Iranian long-range early warning radar system, known as “Moqadam al-Fajr 1” (Motalle’ al-Fajr 1), north of the city of Port Sudan, located on Sudan’s eastern coast along the Red Sea.

This new revelation highlights growing military and intelligence cooperation between the Sudanese army and the Iranian regime, as reported by international media outlets.

The “Motalle’ al-Fajr 1” radar is considered one of the first advanced Iranian radars developed domestically. According to Iranian sources, it is designed to detect and track low-altitude targets with high precision.

Operating in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band, the radar system is noted for its exceptional capability to detect targets in complex and cluttered environments, according to the Hebrew-language website “Nziv.”

The radar’s design is based on 12 Yagi antennas similar to those used in traditional television systems mounted on control and processing equipment, all housed within a container.

The Motalle’ al-Fajr 1 system boasts a detection range of up to 300 kilometers and is capable of identifying targets at altitudes of up to 20 kilometers, surpassing the capabilities of many conventional radar systems.

It also has the capacity to track up to 100 targets simultaneously while maintaining high accuracy, priority ranking, and classification. All radar components, including electrical, communications, and processing systems, are mounted on a mobile trailer, giving the system good mobility for deployment in various locations.

The Motalle’ al-Fajr 1 radar is equipped with an advanced Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) system, enhancing its effectiveness in modern warfare environments and heavy electronic jamming.

In recent months, the supply of Iranian weapons and equipment to the Sudanese army has increased. According to press reports citing a European intelligence source, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sent a shipment of weapons to Sudan on March 17 via an aircraft operated by “Fars Air Qeshm,” an airline owned by the IRGC.

According to the same source, a Boeing 747 aircraft operated by Fars Air Qeshm, bearing the registration code “EP-FAB,” landed in Tehran after arriving from Port Sudan.

Other reports have also revealed the Sudanese army’s use of Iranian-made T-72Z main battle tanks. A video published on April 2 showed a unit of the Sudanese Armed Forces operating a T-72Z main battle tank of Iranian origin, also known in Sudanese service as the T-72Z, Safir-74, or Al-Zubair I.
