Education in North Horr Constituency, Marsabit County, has been on an upward trajectory, thanks to initiatives spearheaded by the area Member of Parliament, Wario Guyo Adhe.
The first-time MP, who is determined to transform the constituency into a model region for development and leadership benchmarking, recently launched an ambitious education programme dubbed Wezesha Masomo. The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on parents by ensuring they only pay half of their children’s school fees annually.
“We launched this program after conducting a thorough fact-finding mission across our constituency,” said the soft-spoken but sharp legislator.
“We did a lot of research and realized that many people were shunning schools due to financial constraints. Since the launch of this program, enrollment has gone up by almost 50 percent. We want to make our county a model region.”
The initiative is funded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and targets 3,000 students in secondary schools and 7,800 in colleges and universities.
The Sh70 million programme will offer Sh20,000 annually to each secondary school student.
“This is a one-of-a-kind initiative. In fact, there is no other constituency in Kenya doing what we are doing,” Adhe noted. “Parents can now educate their children without the heavy financial struggles they faced before.”
Adhe emphasized that an educated population is the backbone of any community and crucial for economic development.
“Our region has a lot of potential, but over the years, it has been overlooked due to political reasons,” he said. “The time for change is now. We are doing everything we can to improve this region.”
