The legal fraternity in Kenya is in mourning following the passing of High Court Judge David Majanja, who died on Wednesday evening while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

A group of city lawyers, led by Danstan Omari, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a judge they described as dedicated, fearless, and inspiring. Omari praised Judge Majanja as a brilliant legal mind who commanded respect and confidence among his peers and extended his heartfelt condolences to Majanja’s family, friends, and the Judiciary.

“Judge Majanja was at the start of a long and illustrious career, making his passing a tragic loss,” Omari stated. “As an advocate of the High Court, I extend my condolences to Hon. Majanja’s family and friends and the Judiciary. May Almighty God grant you the strength to bear this loss, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Majanja, who also served as a Commissioner of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), was a respected figure in Kenya’s legal fraternity, known for his Solomon-like rulings that earned him admiration from justice consumers.

John Khaminwa, another prominent lawyer, expressed his heartbreak over the loss of such an iconic figure in the legal profession. “I am heartbroken because we’ve lost an iconic figure in the legal profession,” Khaminwa said.

The advocates highlighted that the late Justice Majanja will be remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s transformative post-2010 jurisprudence and a crucial pillar in the institution-building of the JSC and the Judiciary.

Appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 2011, Judge Majanja served in various positions throughout his distinguished career. He held positions at the Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Kisii High Courts, as well as at the Commercial and Tax Divisions and the Milimani High Court Civil Division.

The loss of Judge Majanja is felt deeply across the legal community, as he was not only a respected jurist but also a mentor and inspiration to many. His contributions to Kenya’s legal landscape and his commitment to justice will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
