Ministry of Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has launched the Peace Building and Preventing Violent Extremism in East Africa Program, an initiative focused on combating violent extremism and strengthening peace efforts in the region. Supported by UNDP Kenya and KOICA Kenya, the program places communities at the forefront of preventing violence and extremism.

The PS noted that in March 2023, President Rto initiated a comprehensive evaluation of our peace building architecture. This initiative demonstrated the commitment to tackle the dynamic challenges related to peace, security and social cohesion.
Moreover the competition for natural resources and border disputes especially in arid and semi regions have exacerbated and acts as a source of extremism. “In this area’s pre-existing grievances are often exploited by extremist groups to further their own agenda, he added.

Omollo noted from this experience, the country has learned that our communities particularly vulnerable regions are often the primary target of this threats.
“We have come to understand that social cohesiveness and peace cannot be enforced. It must be willingly embraced by citizens to fully guarantee sustainablility in the future.
In noting the unfortunate and regrettable incidences witnessed in the country, the PS noted the Westgate and Garissa University attacks which struck a blow to the nation. In addition, Mpeketoni and Shakahola attacks and massacres underscored the persistent threat of extremism.
President William Ruto’s administration, including a comprehensive review of Kenya’s Peacebuilding Architecture in March 2023, aimed at identifying key conflict triggers to strengthen national peace efforts.
