Majid Al Futtaim Retail, owner and operator of Carrefour in Kenya, has announced the introduction of cage-free eggs at its stores across the country and on its online platform. As a result, by 2032, only eggs produced under “humane conditions” will be sold at Carrefour.
This comes after Majid Al Futtaim Retail’s signing of the Farmed Animal Health and Welfare Policy (FAHWP) under The Humane League in 2020, which commits to promoting alternative and sustainable housing systems, such as cage-free, outdoor access, free-range systems, and organic feeds.
Christophe Orcet, Regional Director of Carrefour — East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail, commented:
“Majid Al Futtaim Retail is proud to provide its customers with products that comply with the highest quality and safety standards, and that have been produced and sourced using socially and environmentally-responsible means. The decision to adopt the FAHWP reflects our unwavering commitment and contribution to uplifting animal welfare standards. The policy will be gradually adopted, with a target to sell 100% cage-free eggs as part of Carrefour’s Private Label by 2030, and across all national brands by 2032.”
Majid Al Futtaim Retail has finalised agreements with three local suppliers to sell their products across various Carrefour stores, and in turn is encouraging farmers country-wide to implement the standards required for the production and supply of cage-free eggs.

Globally, food companies have been increasing their adoption of animal welfare practices. According to the Humane League, over 2,400 companies have committed to the production and supply of cage-free eggs. In 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly passed a resolution acknowledging the role of animal welfare in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
