Kibera’s Laini Saba ward was filled with joy and celebration as residents received long-awaited bursaries for their children’s school fees.

The distribution, covering term one and two, had been delayed due to a backlog caused by the late implementation of the Supplementary budget.

On Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Laini Saba Grounds, over two thousand families finally received the financial assistance they had been eagerly awaiting. The event marked a significant moment for the community, bringing much-needed relief to many struggling with inconsistent income.

Laini Saba Member of County Assembly (MCA), John Musila, addressed journalists at the event, announcing the allocation of Ksh. 2.5 million in bursaries. “I am pleased to announce that our children will be able to return to school as term three begins. Today, we have provided bursaries to over two thousand vulnerable families who applied. This support has brought immense relief to many families in our community,” Musila stated.

Musila, who also serves as the Deputy Minority Leader, thanked Governor Johnson Sakaja for ensuring the timely distribution of the bursaries, which has prevented students from being sent home due to unpaid fees. He acknowledged the support from the county executive and assembly leadership, which has enabled efficient service delivery.

He emphasized that the bursary distribution was fair, ensuring all eligible applicants received the support they needed. Musila also highlighted initiatives to enroll local youth in driving schools, like Rocky Driving School, to enhance their employment prospects after secondary education.

Mama Njoki, a parent of a student at St. Teresa Girls’ School, expressed her gratitude for the fairness in the bursary issuance process. “The current economic situation is challenging for those in informal settlements. We are thankful to the government and our ward representative for their commitment to efficient service delivery,” she said.
