The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) today rolled out a voter registration drive targeting 6-7 million new voters ahead of the 2022 general elections. The process is set to take place in the next thirty days.
The electoral body targets to register at least 4 million of the new voters within the first phase with another exercise set for January next year if the target is not met.
IEBC aims at increasing the number of registered voters from the current 19.6 million to 26.9 million, that is if it meets its 7.2 million new voter target.
Despite the commission lamenting over the shortage of the biometric voter registration kits required for the exercise, it has deployed at least 3 kits to each of the 1,450 wards to facilitate the exercise.
In Nakuru the aspiring leaders led by Daniel Kimani Gitau have urged Kenyans to especially the youth and the elders who have not been registered to do so. Kimani has said this will give them a chance to elect leaders whom they have always been dreaming off.
“Am the incoming Senator Nakuru county. I urge the youth, men and women to wake up and be registered as voters. This will give us a chance to elect leaders who will improve our infrastructure and get the development we have been wanting,” said Gitau.
“You have always been complaining that leaders are not performing according to your expectations. So kindly come be registered as voters. We will get good leaders who will take Nakuru County far,” he added.
The National Youth Leader for Movement United Super Action Arnold Okere [ MUSA] urged the youths especially those born between 1997-2002 and have not been registered to do so as it is their time to take control of the next elections.
“My fellow youth, this is our time, those born between 1997-2002. Come register as voters for as to take control of our life in the coming general elections,” said Arnold.
IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati called out on Political leaders to call out on their supporters to come in large numbers and be registered.
“I ask political parties to ensure that their members who are not registered voters, to reach out to them and encourage them to come and register,” said IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati.
