The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) Kilifi office recently visited the Ukulima Bora Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society in Mtondia, Kilifi County. This cooperative, comprising approximately 40 dairy farmers from Kilifi North Sub-County, is an exemplary model of agricultural success and community collaboration.
Thanks to a partnership between the County Government of Kilifi and the KCB Foundation, the cooperative initially received 15 cows. This number has since expanded to about 60 cows, significantly boosting the cooperative’s dairy production capacity.
Each registered farmer within the cooperative collects about 40 liters of raw milk daily. This milk is brought to the cooperative for storage and market access, solving a critical problem for farmers residing far from town centers who lack adequate storage facilities.
The cooperative is now seeking registration with the MSEA to attract more farmers and enhance its operations. Registration will enable members to benefit from capacity-building training, increased market opportunities, and the acquisition of essential equipment such as pasteurizers, coolers, and ATM dispensing machines for shops and supermarkets.
Currently, the Ukulima Bora Dairy Farmers Cooperative adds value to their milk by producing yoghurt, cheese, maziwa mala, and pasteurized milk. They are also planning to expand their product line to include butter and ghee, further enhancing their market presence and profitability.
By supporting cooperatives like Ukulima Bora, the MSEA aims to empower micro and small enterprises across Kilifi County, fostering economic growth and improving the livelihoods of local farmers.
