The Communication Information and Innovation (CII) Committee recently conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) and the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Eldoret Branches, with the aim of evaluating their operations and potential for growth.
Led by Hon. Bernard Kitur of Nandi Hills, the Committee delegation embarked on a fact-finding mission to oversee the progress of KIMC’s new Eldoret Branch construction project, estimated at 558M. The proposed site, strategically located, promises to bring development and positively impact the local community.
During discussions, KIMC officials highlighted challenges stemming from a rigid legislative framework that hampers growth opportunities, particularly in engaging donors. Emphasizing the institution’s reliance on government support, they expressed concerns about operational challenges and potential setbacks for students when funds are delayed.
In response, lawmakers urged KIMC to devise innovative strategies to ensure content creators receive adequate returns on investment (ROI) and enhance community engagement to foster growth.
Lawmakers also visited the MCK Eldoret Branch, where officials outlined their vision of providing a conducive space for accredited journalists to unleash creativity and maximize services. While acknowledging the branch’s aspirations, lawmakers identified inefficiencies and recommended collaborative efforts with stakeholders to enhance resources and amenities.
Hon. Jematiah emphasized the importance of creating an appealing environment to attract diverse talents and foster creativity. She urged MCK to invest in cutting-edge facilities and innovative outreach programs to remain competitive and relevant in the evolving media landscape.
In response to insights gained from the visit, Hon. Jematiah stressed the significance of strategic planning and engaging young talents to unlock their potential. She encouraged the institutions to align initiatives with global standards to drive innovation and excellence in media and communication.
Despite facing challenges such as resource limitations and infrastructure gaps, both KIMC and MCK Eldoret Branch expressed their commitment to overcoming obstacles and leveraging opportunities to drive innovation and excellence in media and communication.
The visit by the CII Committee underscores the government’s commitment to fostering growth and development in the media sector, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping public discourse and promoting societal progress. As discussions continue, stakeholders are poised to collaborate and implement strategic measures to address challenges and unlock the full potential of media institutions in Kenya.
