Chelang’at Koskei & Company Advocates shone brightly at this year’s Women in Business Awards gala. The Eldoret-based law firm won in the Legal Services Provider of the Year category, a major achievement.

Considering that the firm was established in 2018 – less than five years ago – the accolade confirmed that the legal practice was being run the right way, with all the necessary documentation required of any business.

Indeed, to many Kenyans who haven’t come into contact with this relatively young legal firm, the win may have come as a big surprise. However, that is not the case for the firm’s clients and the communities it has engaged with.

Miss. Nancy Koskei, the founder, has an interesting background; The young lady is a law Graduate from Moi university school of law,an Advocate from the Kenya school of Law  also holds a master’s Degree in business Administration from The University of Nairobi that could explain how the firm came to impress judges and the voting public.

As she explains, the legal firm scored highly on the criteria set out for participating firms. First, the contestant had to be woman-headed firm offering legal services. Two, it had to present audited accounts showing how the firm was performing based on its financials.

Ms Koskei reveals that the  her entrepreneurial skills is majorly acquired through participation on various business platforms that aims to support and mentor young entrepreneurs’  where she build her skills ,mindset and network to take charge and fast track her career harnessing   from the great mentorship of Women in Business CEO currently the Principal secretary of state department for correctional services Hon. PS Mary.

After completing her legal studies at the Kenya School of Law and before her admission to the Bar, she registered a business in 2014 that has been successful since.

Then from 2015 to 2017, Ms Koskei worked with an NGO that provided free legal services to people infected with or affected by HIV/Aids. However, the NGO had limited capacity to extend its service to many women and children.

Consequently, in December 2017, she decided to open her legal practice. The idea was to be in a position to offer free legal services to women and children who couldn’t afford fees in gender violence and children cases.

Chelang’at Koskei channels part of its profit to pro bono services to needy women and children.

In partnership with other advocates, Mrs.Jacklyne Kibaru the executive director , she has formed an NGO to offer outreach, advocacy and capacity building to women, youth and children, to empower them through legal support.

Ms Koskei’s experience in business, the NGO world and in the legal sector has paid off. She is now planning to expand the Nairobi office as the firm grows to serve more clients and the community. Currently, she has offices in Eldoret, Kitale and Nairobi.
